South Shore Railroad celebrates record 300,000th rider at the South Bend Regional Airport

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD), the owner and operator of the South Shore Railroad service celebrated its 300,000th South Bend rider on December 29th. A lucky passenger waiting for Train 14 (8:48 a.m. scheduled departure) was selected and presented with a series of prizes provided by NICTD and The South Bend Regional Airport (SBN) at a brief ceremony prior to the train’s departure.

The South Shore station was relocated to the South Bend Regional Airport in 1992 from its location on Washington Street. This marked the culmination of an effort to establish a multi-modal transportation complex in the Michiana Region. South Bend Regional is the only small airport in the United States featuring air, interstate rail, and interstate bus services at one multi-modal terminal location.

South Shore traffic to Northwest Indiana and the Chicago loop from South Bend has grown dramatically since the initiation of service at SBN.

According to John Parsons, Director of Marketing and Planning for NICTD:

“It took us 12 years to grow from 109,350 passengers in 1992 to 202,410 passengers in 2004; and only 4 years to grow to over 300,000 passengers to and from South Bend in 2008! The South Bend Airport is one of our fastest growing stations. It provides all the amenities as well as a secure environment for both long and short-term parking which is very important to our passengers.”
